What Is Addiction Treatment Marketing?

Addiction treatment marketing, also called addiction marketing or substance abuse treatment marketing, is everything a program does to help people find it, trust it, and take the next step. Those people are the person who needs care, a family member searching for them, and a professional deciding where to refer.

The hard part is that need is not the same as demand. SAMHSA estimates that 47.2 million people aged 12 or older needed substance use treatment in 2025, and that about 1 in 6 of them (16.0 percent, or 7.6 million people) received it.1

In the same survey, 94.5 percent of the 38.1 million adults with an untreated substance use disorder did not perceive that they needed treatment.1 Marketing cannot create readiness. Its job is to make your program easy to find, easy to trust, and easy to reach when someone is ready.

If you have open beds or appointments and are not sure where to start, the nine tactics below are in the order we would work through them, with what each one does for you.

How Do You Market an Addiction Treatment Center?

To market an addiction treatment center, build your digital presence first, then earn trust and referrals, and add paid ads only after LegitScript and Google certification. Before you promote anything, confirm who you can admit, how much capacity you have, who answers inquiries, and how you will record where each admission came from.

The steps overlap. Organic social media and email can start at any time. Only paid ads have to wait for certification.

An addiction treatment marketing strategy in three steps and nine tactics

  1. Step 1: Build your digital presence
  2. Website and service pagesPeople find a page that answers their exact question.
  3. Google Business Profile and local searchNearby searchers can find and call you.
  4. Reviews and reputationFamilies see real feedback before they call.
  5. Step 2: Earn trust and referrals
  6. Educational contentYou reach families earlier in their search.
  7. Referral relationshipsProfessionals send people who already fit.
  8. Directories and listingsPeople who check a directory reach you.
  9. Step 3: Add paid ads, social media, and email
  10. First: ad certificationLegitScript and Google certification come before any paid ads.
  11. Paid searchYou reach people searching right now.
  12. Social mediaPeople see a real place with real staff.
  13. Email and alumniReferrers, families, and alumni stay in touch.

Step 1: Build Your Digital Presence

This is where rehab center marketing starts. Most drug rehab online marketing depends on these three, because every other tactic sends people to your website or your Google profile.

1. Website and Service Pages

Give each level of care, each major insurer, and each real location its own page: who it is for, what happens, and how to start. Show licenses, accreditation, and the clinical team, because addiction treatment center marketing depends on proof. Our addiction treatment SEO services page shows what this work involves.

Outcome: People searching for a specific program, insurer, or city land on a page that answers them, and can see whether your program fits before they call.

Example from our work: for American Detox & Treatment, insurer and service-area pages were part of a project in which estimated monthly search visits went from 166 to 472 between September 2025 and September 2026. These are Ahrefs estimates of visits, not admissions, and other programs will differ.

2. Google Business Profile and Local Search

Complete a profile for each real facility: name, address, phone, hours, services, and photos. Keep those details identical everywhere they appear online.

Outcome: Your program can appear in Google Maps and local results when someone nearby searches for treatment, and they can call in one tap. That is why the listed number has to be answered.

3. Reviews and Reputation

Ask for reviews the same low-pressure way every time, and reply to each one. Never confirm in a reply that the reviewer was a patient, and do not offer anything in exchange for a review.

Outcome: A family comparing two or three programs sees recent, real feedback and a program that responds, which makes the first call easier to make.

Step 2: Earn Trust and Referrals

Once people can find you, give them, and the professionals who refer them, reasons to choose you.

4. Educational Content

Write the pages people need before they call: what detox involves, how insurance is checked, how to help someone who is not ready. Have a named clinician review every clinical page.

Outcome: Families can find you earlier, while they are still working out what to do, and your site has more ways to be found.

Example from our work: for Restoration Recovery, one maintained guide to state kratom laws accounted for most of a rise in estimated monthly search visits from 93 to 1,986 between September 2025 and September 2026. These are Ahrefs estimates of informational visits, not inquiries.

5. Referral Relationships

Start with the hospitals, primary care practices, therapists, and psychiatrists already near you. Give them a referral page and a direct line, and have an attorney review any pay tied to referrals before you offer it.

Outcome: Referrers know who you admit and who to call, so the people they send are more likely to fit. This source does not depend on ad budgets or rankings.

6. Directories and Listings

Keep one master record of your name, address, phone, and services, and make every listing match it, including SAMHSA’s FindTreatment.gov and your payers’ directories.

Outcome: Someone who checks a directory finds your correct number and services, not an old listing or a third-party call center.

Step 3: Add Paid Ads, Social Media, and Email

Do you need LegitScript certification to advertise a rehab? For paid ads, yes. LegitScript certification is a third-party review of a treatment provider’s licensing, staff, and practices. In the United States, Google requires it, plus Google’s own certification, before it will run addiction services ads,2 and LegitScript says Microsoft and Meta recognize it too.3 Steps 1 and 2 do not need it.

7. Paid Search

Use it when you have open capacity, the phones are covered, and you can track admissions. Target your service area and the plans you accept, and pause it when beds or slots fill.

Outcome: Usually the quickest way to reach people searching for treatment right now, and one you can turn up or down as beds or appointments open.

8. Social Media

Show your team, your facility, and what a day looks like. Paid social needs certification first, and staff should never confirm in a comment or message that someone is a patient.

Outcome: People who look you up see a real place with real staff, which supports every other tactic. Expect trust from social media, not many direct admissions.

9. Email and Alumni

Keep two lists. General email goes to families and referrers who asked to hear from you, with an easy way to opt out. Alumni contact comes from a treatment relationship, so get written authorization first.

Outcome: Referrers and families hear from you between contacts, so you are easier to remember when the need comes up again, and alumni can stay connected to the program.

Every program starts from a different place. If it would help to map out where yours should begin, we can work through it together. It is a free conversation, with no obligation. Let’s Plan Your Strategy

Drug Rehab Marketing Rules to Know

Most drug rehab marketing problems that become legal or account problems trace back to one of these five. This is a planning summary, not legal advice.

RuleWhat it coversWhat it means for you
Google and LegitScript certification2 3Paid ads for drug and alcohol addiction services in the United States, for each facility that advertises.$1,595 to apply and $3,095 a year per facility for one to nine facilities (October 2026). Certification does not guarantee ad approval.
18 U.S.C. § 220 (EKRA)4Paying or receiving anything of value in return for patient referrals.Up to $200,000 and 10 years in prison per occurrence. Exceptions exist, so get legal review of any referral-linked pay.
HIPAA and HHS tracking guidance5Pixels, analytics, chat, and forms on a provider’s website.Know what each tool sends, and keep health details out of ad platforms.
42 CFR Part 26Substance use disorder records at federally assisted programs.Get written authorization before using alumni lists, testimonials, or case stories.
FTC Act and the Opioid Addiction Recovery Fraud Prevention Act7Deceptive claims about treatment services.Substantiate every claim. Civil penalties apply.

Improving Addiction Treatment Marketing: What to Track

Each month, count four things by source: inquiries, inquiries that fit your program, assessments completed, and admissions. Admissions is the number that decides what you keep. When something is off, start from the symptom:

What you seeLook atFirst check
Plenty of inquiries, wrong fitYour service pagesDo they state your payers, levels of care, and service area?
Good inquiries, few admissionsHow inquiries are answeredCall your own numbers. Time the benefits check.

Marketing for Addiction Treatment Centers: Common Questions

How do rehab centers get more leads and admissions?

Rehab centers get more admissions by first fixing what happens to the inquiries they already receive, then widening reach: a page for each level of care, insurer, and location, a complete Google Business Profile, and referral relationships. Paid search comes after certification.

How much should a treatment center spend on marketing?

There is no honest single number for what a treatment center should spend on marketing. It depends on open capacity, payer mix, and what an admission is worth to you. We have not found a verifiable public benchmark for cost per admission, so use your own data once you can track admissions by source.

Can a treatment center pay per admission or per qualified call?

Be very careful. Payment tied to patient referrals can fall under 18 U.S.C. § 220, which carries criminal penalties.4 Ask the vendor how its leads are generated and have an attorney review the contract before you sign.

Is alcohol rehab marketing different from drug rehab marketing?

The tactics are the same. If you treat both, drug and alcohol rehab marketing is one plan with separate pages by substance and level of care. Say exactly whether you offer medically supervised detox, because alcohol withdrawal can become life-threatening,8 and which FDA-approved medications your clinicians prescribe.9
